Description

An overview of the principles of observation in modern astrophysics and how it can be used to study the properties of astrophysical objects.

Compétences visées

•    Applying knowledge in physics;

•    Apply methods from mathematics and digital technology;

•    Produce a critical analysis, with hindsight and perspective;

•    Communicate in writing and orally, including in English.

Syllabus

  • Imaging and exploitation of observations:
    • direct imaging, interferometry, applications.
    • UV, optical, infrared, radio and mechanisms of emission of continuum in these domains.
    • Photometry (Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and stellar evolution, morphology of galaxies ...);
  • Observations in spectroscopy: principles of spectrographs.
    • Transmission and absorption mechanisms of spectral lines, bases of radiation transfer.
    • Exploitation (expansion of the Universe, 21 cm line of hydrogen and gas kinematics, diagnosis of physical conditions and chemical composition ...);
