Description
This is a two-part course presenting advanced concepts in particle physics and nuclear physics.

Syllabus
I-Principle of special relativity and its consequences for the description of space-time and its transformations, mass-energy equivalence.
II-Nuclear physics
II.1 Nuclear reactions: global properties of the nucleus, theory of direct reactions and formation of compound nuclei.
II.2 Nuclear models: Fermi gas - stability of degenerate Fermi gas, case of self-conjugate nuclei. Layered model: basic formulation, nuclear mean field, some recent developments (residual interactions).
II.3 Collective models: isoscalar vibrations/giant resonances, rotations of deformed nuclei.
II.4 Gamma decay, electromagnetic interaction and nuclei.
II.5 Beta decay, weak interaction and nuclei.
III-Particle physics
III.1 Introduction to particle physics. Short historical introduction, Particle and interaction zoology.
III.2 Special Relativity applied to particle physics. Collisions.
III.3 Symmetries. Discrete and continuous symmetries in particle physics. CPT symmetries. Conservation laws. CP violation. neutrino oscillations
III.4 Interactions. Cross-section & luminosity. Lifetime & Resonances. Application of relativistic Fermi Golden's rule and phase space computation.
III.5 Pedestrian introduction to Feynman diagrams.
III.6 The quark model. Some group theory for particle physics.
